This session is where you will learn about knife facts and common misconceptions you may have. This will lead onto exploring how to help someone who has been injured by a knife or other risk taking behaviours.
What you will need
Instructions
Play a game of stand up, sit down using the statements in the powerpoint. Discuss their preconceived ideas regarding knife facts. Explore the current situation in their area and their own experiences.
Explain that you are going to be learning first aid to help someone if they have consumed too much alcohol (refer to last week) or have been injured with a knife. Watch video on bleeding and ask the young people to demonstrate them putting pressure on different parts of their bodies. Split the class into pairs (someone they are comfortable with where possible) and number them 1 and 2. Explain that they are going to be touching each other to move their bodies around. If anyone is not comfortable with that, their partner can tell them how to move their body instead of moving it themselves. Watch the video on how to do the recovery position and then take them through it step by step with person 1 going first and then number 2. Give them time to practice. Emphasise the seriousness of this and that it is not a chance for them to carry on.

Handout the knife fact and first aid cards and create a true/false column on the board at the front. The young people must decide whether the statements are true or false and stick them on the board at the front when invited. Discuss their answers and summarise at the end.
